Consultant Pharmacist Initial Certification Course

The course consists of two and a half days of comprehensive study of the laws, regulations and procedures for pharmacists who want to consult in a nursing facility, hospital, or other work environment that requires the services of a Consultant Pharmacist. Pharmacists will learn what is required of them during an inspection of the facilities and be able to prepare the facility for an inspection. A comprehensive exam is given on the final day on the materials that were covered during the course. After passing the exam with a score of at least 70%, pharmacists work under the direction of a Consultant Pharmacist of Record for a specified time, after which he/she will file an application with the State of Florida to become a Consultant Pharmacist.

Knowledge and Skills taught during the course include

  • Licensing and proficiency requirements to obtain a consultant pharmacist license.
  • How to develop and utilize a policy and procedures manual
  • Evaluation (review) of medication orders in a hospital or nursing home:
    •  For appropriate indication or diagnosis;
    •  For drug interactions with other medication;
    •  For duplication of therapy; appropriate drug dose;
    •  For interval and route of administration
  • The requirements for handling all drugs including controlled substances.
  • The source and rationale for State and Federal regulations governing pharmaceutical services in institutional pharmacy settings such as residential care facilities, jails, psychiatric care units and hospitals.
  • Consultant Pharmacist Recertification Courses

    The State of Florida requires that Consultant Pharmacists obtain a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education in addition to the regular continuing education required of all pharmacists licensed in the State. The continuing education programs must meet certain criteria and be approved by the Board of Pharmacy. The College of Pharmacy offers several courses for Consultant Pharmacist Recertification that meet these requirements. Some of the subject matter for these courses is error prevention, diabetes management, dispensing to Americans by foreign pharmacies and laws and regulations about opioid dispensing. Others are added frequently.


    The University of Florida College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
