Overview

Pharmacists who complete this Pharmaceutical Compounding Certificate Program will be able to extemporaneously prepare viable phamacotherapeutic non-sterile dosage forms, having given ample consideration to such issues as medical necessity, patient specific need, and legal and regulatory guidelines in consultation with a prescriber. Practical and technical skill development is equally learned in a compounding laboratory environment where the pharmacist will be trained in all aspects of non-sterile preparatory procedures. Pharmacists will also become well versed in the requirements to set up a business development marketing plan.

Intended Audience

This Certificate Program, with its broad range of core competencies in pharmaceutical compounding, is well suited for: 1) Both the newly practicing and experienced pharmacist who wishes to complement their business and establish a compounding practice for the first time; 2) The experienced compounding pharmacist who wishes to gain a more in-depth understanding of the clinical, pharmacological and preparatory procedures involved in the decision-making process in compounding, 3) The expert compounding pharmacist wishing to take a refresher course so as to demonstrate core competencies in this field of expertise.

Program Description

This is a comprehensive two-part Certificate Program composed of a Self-study Program followed by an intensive, 3-day, live program. Click here for a brief live program description.

The Self-study program establishes a knowledge base spanning a broad range of subjects encompassing biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, and physiology, as they apply to sites of administration, routes of delivery and sites of absorption. Key elements of dosage form composition are also explored. Topics include a study of excipients, with particular emphasis on vehicles of delivery. Related subjects include: Federal and State regulatory guidelines, USP/NF laboratory and preparatory procedures and techniques, Standard Operating Procedures and Pharmaceutical calculations. The process of formulation, preparation and presentation of all non-sterile dosage forms round out the self-study program, in preparation for a most dynamic, interactive and experiential live program.

The Live program is an evidence-based and problem-based learning experience in non-sterile compounding. Pharmacy practice tools and decision-making models provide guidance and direction to the course participant. Emphasis is placed on formulation, preparation and presentation of solid, semi-solid and liquid dosage forms with a specific focus on blends and mixtures (solutions and dispersions; emulsions and suspensions) for oral, rectal, vaginal, urethral, topical and transdermal routes of delivery. Quality assurance, regulatory compliance in accordance with Federal and State law, and the establishment of Standard Operating Procedures are also featured. Business development marketing and reimbursement models round out the components of this course ensuring the development of a successful compounding

Certificate Program Continuing Education Credits

This Certificate Program in Pharmacy entitled, "The Science of Pharmaceutical Compounding: Pharmacist Training™" is accredited, by the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, for 55 hours of continuing education credit (5.5 CEU's); 25 hours of continuing education credit for its Self-study course (2.5 CEU's) and 30 hours of continuing education credit for its Live course (3.0 CEU's)

The Universal Program Numbers (UPN's) for this Certificate Program include: 012-000-07-173-L04, 012-000-07-174-L04, and 012-000-07-175-H04. Requirements for credit for this Certificate Program includes; Self-study Program: Learning assessment (80% minimum passing grade), Live Program: Mandatory attendance for all live program sessions, learning assessment (theoretical / practical) and program evaluation. A statement of credit will be issued, by mail, within thirty (30) days following successful completion of this Certificate Program.
