VETERINARY PHARMACY
FOR PRACTICING PHARMACISTS
Global Educational Objectives
To enable pharmacists to explain and recall the unique legal and regulatory restrictions applicable to veterinary medicine, food-animal medicine and compounding for animal patients by pharmacists and veterinarians. This includes evaluating the appropriateness of compounded medication requests and applying ethical standards when providing services to veterinarians, animal owners and animal patients.
To prepare pharmacists to communicate effectively with animal owners and veterinarians to: meet state mandated counseling requirements, enhance medication compliance, solve drug administration problems, and recommend appropriate drug therapy choices for the betterment of animal health.
To enhance the pharmacists "non-linear" critical thinking skills needed when dealing with multiple animal species in unique circumstances to solve pharmaceutical-related problems.
To enable pharmacists to explain and define the pathology, signs/symptoms, diagnosis, treatments and prognosis for the 15 most common diseases in companion animals with particular emphasis on the ability to summarize pharmacotherapy options.

Topic Specific Objectives
1. Explain and recall Compliance Policy Guideline 608.400 "Compounded Drugs for Animals" and the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act (AMDUCA).
2. Compare and contrast the differences between companion animals and food animals.
3. Identify, locate and interpret veterinary specific informatics.
4. Describe the human-animal bond and its positive effects upon human health
5. Discuss public health issues that impact veterinary and human pharmacy
6. List and describe pharmacotherapy options for these disease states:
a. Feline diabetes
b. Canine diabetes
c. Equine Protozaol Myeloencephalitis (EPM)
d. Common anti-infectives used in companion animals
e. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca in canines
f. Hypothyroidism in canines
g. Hyperthyroidism in felines
h. Primary epilepsy in canines

OVERVIEW
Welcome to Veterinary Therapeutics for Practicing Pharmacists! We hope you find this course educational and enjoyable!
This course is APCE approved for 30 hours of continuing education by the University of Florida. The ACPE number is 012-000-08-108-H04-P and the expiration date is 7/20/2011.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
This online course is designed to fit in to the busy schedules of practicing pharmacists. You will have 6 full months to complete the course, and may request an extension if necessary. You may set your own schedule for completion of the course.
For ACPE credit you must do the following 5 things.
1. Complete the pre-assessment survey for the course (this will be used to measure the educational outcomes of the course)
2. Read each individual topic relating to veterinary therapeutics
3. Take a short quiz at the end of each topic, achieving a 70% or higher score (quiz consists of 5-10 questions per topic) Questions are straight-forward and reinforce important points in the readings.
4. Complete the post-assessment survey for the course (this will be used to measure the educational outcomes of the course)
5. Contact the UF Continuing Education department at continuinged@cop.ufl.edu or Elaine Lust at elaine.lust@pvpl.com via e-mail notifying us that you have completed the course so that we can get the certificate of CE completion paperwork started.
