Essential Elements of
Compounded Sterile Preparations

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This is a comprehensive two-part Certificate Program in Pharmacy composed of a self-study program followed by a three-day live program.

The Self-study component of this Certificate Program in Pharmacy is designed in the style of a workbook providing a progressive and cumulative learning experience. Its highly interactive format takes a complex subject and turns it into well-packaged and comprehensive information sets based on scientific principles for which the participant will grow to appreciate. Its design ensures a significantly higher than average level of learning and a growing self-confidence. It is intellectually stimulating and challenging as it builds on your knowledge base.

Major topics covered in this certificate Program in Pharmacy include:

  • Facility design
  • Technology: electromechanical equipment, reusable and disposable      devices
  • Aseptic manipulations and techniques
  • Quality management systems
  • Mathematical calculations
  • Physical and chemical properties
  • Physiological considerations

The self-study component of this Certificate Program in Pharmacy concludes with a series of formulas presented in a unique template specifically designed for sterile compounding and highly compliant with USP 797 regulatory guidelines.

The Live program component is designed as: 1) a complement of dynamic interactive problem-solving sessions that bring to the forefront of discussion regulatory parameters and scientific principles that govern over sterile compounding and 2) a series of rotating practical application workstations where the program participant will make up compounded sterile preparations in a USP 797 compliant environment.

Participants will be afforded the opportunity to work with a broad range of technology to work with a broad range of technology from electromechanical equipment in the form of automated compounding devices to reusable and disposable devices. They will gain practical experience with, and in, vented balance safety enclosures, horizontal and vertical laminar airflow hoods, barrier isolators and open architecture environments. Participants will also gain hands-on experience using wet and dr7y heat sterilizers, depyrogenation ovens, incubators, automated compounding devices and environmental monitoring equipment not to mention a vast array of reusable and disposable devices.

Participants will control, perform, validate and document all their activities throughout the course of the three days while making up compounded sterile preparations.

Simultaneously, participants will learn processes of self-assessment, assess the performance and competencies of others, and all the while receive written commentary by highly trained subject matter experts fulfilling the role of facilitators. An underlying goal of this live program is to have all program participants accumulate a set of performance evaluations for self-reflection, and gain experience in training and monitoring the performance and clean room behaviors of others; this a regulatore requirement of USP 797.
