The HCUPnet Database information provided is a summary of the information presented by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and is part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project.
HCUPnet is a tool for identifying, tracking, analyzing, and comparing statistics on hospitals at the national, regional, and state level.
With HCUPnet you have easy access to national statistics and trends and selected state statistics about hospital stays. HCUPnet guides you step-by-step to obtain the statistics you need. HCUPnet generates statistics using the 1997 data from the
Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) and from the
State Inpatient Databases (SID) for those states that have agreed to participate. HCUPnet is part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
HCUPnet Overview
First, you will be given the opportunity to select national trends, detailed national statistics, or detailed statistics for selected states.
Then you will be asked to select specific conditions or procedures of interest, to rank order conditions or procedures (show the conditions with the highest length of stay, total charges, or death rates), or to examine all discharges in general. The conditions can be ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes, ICD-9-CM procedure codes, Clinical Classifications Software (CCS) diagnosis categories, CCS procedure categories, Diagnosis Related Groups, or Major Diagnostic Categories.
Next, you can choose the outcomes or measures that you are interested in. These can be length of stay (mean or median), total charges (mean or median), in-hospital deaths, and discharge status. You can also choose to compare types of patients (by age, sex, primary payer, and income) and types of hospitals (by ownership, teaching status, location, bedsize, and region).
