J. Daniel Robinson, Pharm.D.

Professor

Dan received his A.S. from Abraham Baldwin College, B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Georgia and became one of the first Doctor of Pharmacy practitioners following graduation from the University of Cincinnati while completing a two-year research residency in clinical pharmacokinetics at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dan has served as a clinical pharmacist at various hospitals including Director of Pharmacy at Third Field Surgical Hospital, Saigon, Vietnam. He founded the ambulatory clinical pharmacy services at the VA Hospital while serving as Assistant Professor at Samford University, Birmingham, AL. He and his wife, Camille, moved to Gainesville in 1977 to become an Assistant Professor with the College of Pharmacy and Community Health and Family Medicine at the University of Florida. He served as an Associate Professor for six years before becoming Professor of Pharmacy and Medicine during which time he supervised over 20 residents, graduate students, and fellows. Dan has served briefly as Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy Practice before becoming Executive Associate Dean for 6 years of the UF College of Pharmacy. He has written over 100 articles and several books funded by research grants and software development contracts.

Dr. Robinson has written over 20 copyrighted desktop, laptop, handheld, and smart phone computer programs for improved pharmacokinetic-based dosage regimen design, pharmacy health care outcomes, pharmacoeconomics, pharmaceutical care reimbursement, adverse drug reactions, drug usage evaluation, disease state management, compliance enhancement, and clinical monitoring.

In 1981 the University of Florida approved his founding of a private company, Simkin, Inc. He oversaw five software engineers and two Pharm.D. software designers as Simkin through marketing agreements with Hoffman-La Roche, Merck, HBO, Dade Microscan, Micromedex, and IBAX (IBM and Baxter Healthcare Software Company) grew to provide clinical pharmacy software to 525 hospitals in 25 countries. Dr. Robinson sold the company to a wireless company, Semotus Solutions and Micromedex (Div. of Thomson/Reuters) in 2001 to devote more time to focus on distance education programs for practicing pharmacists.

Dr. Robinson has made over than 100 invited presentations for a number of national meetings including the American Society for Automation in Pharmacy, American Society of Healthcare Pharmacists, and the American Medical Association. He is a current member of the Rho Chi Honorary Society and the APhA.

Dr. Robinson completed a 3 year Franciscan Friar Ecumenical Program at the San Pedro Center in Orlando, FL in June 2004 to become a Minister of Spiritual Direction. He currently serves on the Coordinating Council for Spiritual Directors International to plan quarterly meetings on Spiritual Care in health centers worldwide. His goal is to integrate the human spirit into programs to improve health, wholeness, professional life mentoring and spiritual development for all involved. Dan is a founding member of the UF Health Science Spirituality and Health Center (S and H) where western and eastern medical and spiritual practices unite with the arts to improve patient holistic healing.

Dr. Robinson has received numerous awards including the Distinguished Medal Award of Vietnam, Teacher of the Year, College of Medicine Family Practice Residency Program and the Director’s Award, Working Professional Doctor of Pharmacy Program.

Dan founded and directed the University of Florida Family Practice Pharmacy Training Program, the Center for Computer Applications in Pharmacy, the Clinical Pharmacokinetic Services at the Family Practice Medical Group and Alachua General Hospital, the Working Professional Doctor of Pharmacy Program, and the Clinical Pharmacy Services for The Village and UF Oak Hammock Retirement Communities.

Dr. Robinson designed the healing labyrinth for Sholom Park in Ocala, Florida and was recently presented the keynote address at the opening of the UF College of Medicine’s Wilmot Gardens with the UF/Shands Health Center Complex where he is developing sacred spaces for the families of patients with life threatening illnesses. He serves as the Spiritual Director for the Florida Shade and Fresh Water Program, the Camp Weed and Cerveny Conference Center, and the U.S. Veterans Wounded Warrior healing retreats for those suffering from post-traumatic stress (PTS) syndrome.

Dr. Robinson retires from the UF COP Department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research in February 2010 after 33 years at the University of Florida to pursue the development of clinical tools for practicing pharmacists, practice palliative pharmacotherapy, lead ecumenical spiritual retreats and be part of the planning group for the Academy for Spiritual Formation and Soul Companioning. Dan and Camille have two children, Jennifer who attended UNC – Chapel Hill, currently living in Gainesville and Jordan, who attended UF and is currently a second year law student at Ole Miss. Camille, recently retired as Director of Nurture and Care at Trinity United Methodist Church. They hope to remain in Gainesville and travel during the summers to the mountains of North Carolina, New England, and Europe.
