Graduate Studies: Ph.D. Program
About the Program
The University of Florida College of Pharmacy offers a PhD Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a concentration in Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy Research (POP PhD). The POP PhD is divided into three specializations, including Pharmacoepidemiology, Pharmacoeconomics and Patient Safety and Medication Use. The program, housed in the Department of Pharmaceutical Outcomes & Policy for more than 30 years, was created to meet the continued demands of academic, private, and governmental organizations to build research capacity surrounding the safe, effective, and efficient use of medications. The degree provides individuals with the credentials to develop and direct clinical research units in universities, pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations, and government organizations. Successful graduates have a range of technical and disciplinary competencies, in research design, measurement, inferential statistics, the communication of research results, the evaluation of research, research ethics, healthcare delivery and the medication use system, the drug product, and behavioral issues surrounding medication use. Specialization in Pharmacoepidemiology enables individuals to conduct and evaluate phase IV studies and develop pharmacovigilance programs. Its counterpart, pharmacoeconomics prepares individuals to evaluate cost, cost effectiveness and cost benefit of medicines and medical technology. Individuals with specialization in Patient Safety and Program Evaluation conduct analysis of healthcare systems or individuals therein and develop and implement patient safety programs. Students are only admitted into the PhD program and the Masters Program during the Fall term. There are no admissions during the Spring term.
