Admission Requirements - Ph.D. degree program

The Ph.D. program is open to any individual regardless of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, handicap, or place of residence. All applicants will be considered on a competitive basis. A degree in pharmacy is not required for admission; however, familiarity with pharmacy, in particular, and health care, in general, is considered to be an asset. The Department adheres to the following requirements:

  • a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (on a 4-point scale),
  • a competitive Graduate Record Examination (GRE),
  • three letters of recommendation, and
  • a biographical sketch including a statement of career goals and reason for selecting a program of study in Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy.

International Applicants

In addition to the above requirements, international applicants must submit one of the following sets of test scores. Students are especially encouraged to apply if they achieve one of the test scores listed below.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL)
  • Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL® (TOEFL® iBT)
    • a score of 25 or higher for EACH score on the Reading, Writing, and Listening sections
    • a score of 27 or higher on the Speaking section of the TOEFL® iBT
  • Computer-based TOEFL (CBT) and Test of Spoken English (TSE)
    • a score of 250 or higher total score on CBT, and
    • a score of 55 or higher on the Test of Spoken English
  • Paper-based TOEFL (PBT) and Test of Spoken English (TSE)
    • a score of 600 or higher total score on PBT, and
    • a score of 55 or higher on the Test of Spoken English

Although no formal interview is required, each applicant is encouraged to visit the Department or complete a telephone interview with members of the Department.
