Office for Research Affairs
The Senior Associate Dean for Research Affairs provides oversight for research administration of the College of Medicine and coordinates the general research functions for the College of Medicine (COM) Dean's Office. The Office for Research Affairs (ORA) staff is responsible for implementing policies and procedures relating to research for the COM and works closely with the UF Office for Research & Graduate Programs (RGP) to ensure that COM policies are in accordance with institutional goals and objectives. The Sr. Assoc. Dean represents the COM on various institutional committees, and interprets federal, state, and private granting agency policies and procedures; and oversees COM matters pertaining to conflict of interest (financial and other), compliance with IACUC and IRB guidelines, and scientific integrity for the College. ORA serves as a clearinghouse and reference center for the COM faculty regarding funding opportunities and faculty research expertise. Peter joins the College of Medicine after serving the Health Science Center as Associate Vice President for Academic Support and Research 1995-98, where he was responsible for the services and budgets of Animal Resources, Information Technology, Teaching Resources, the Learning Resource Center, and Library. His faculty appointments include the Department of Health Policy and Epidemiology (Professor), College of Medicine; and Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Health Care Administration, in the College of Pharmacy. Peter joined the University of Florida faculty in 1973, after completing an MSP in Hospital Pharmacy Administration in the UF College of Pharmacy ("72), a Residency in Hospital Pharmacy Administration and Clinical Practice at the Gainesville VAMC, and a BS in Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin ("67). From 1979 through 1995 he served as Assistant Dean, Associate Dean and Executive Associate Dean in the College of Pharmacy. His academic interests center on geriatric pharmacotherapy, long-term care, and consultant pharmacist services. He has been responsible for establishing numerous teaching/patient service programs in the Health Science Center, including the UF Statewide Drug Information Center, the Florida Poison Information and Treatment Center in Jacksonville, Pharmaceutical Services Programs at University Medical Center - Jacksonville, Pharmacy Services at Tacachale, and the College of Pharmacy Statewide Clinical Teaching Network. He garnered the first grant/contract in the Department of Pharmacy Practice in 1974, and during his career has accumulated over $14,000,000 in extramural training/patient services contracts and grants. During his teaching career he established a multi-disciplinary teaching program at a Gainesville long-term care facility where he also served as consultant pharmacist. He has served as instructor, facilitator, and program coordinator for the UF Consultant Pharmacist Licensing program for 25 years. He has published over 50 professional/educational papers/articles and given more than 200 professional and educational presentations at national and state meetings. Active in state and national pharmacy organizations, he has held many elected and appointed offices, and is the only Florida pharmacist to serve as president of both the Florida Society of Health System Pharmacists and the Florida Pharmacy Association. He is a charter Fellow in the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management. He is currently Chairman of the Joint Medical Examining Board – Board of Pharmacy Negative Formulary Advisory Board. |
