| According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the US. There are 10.3 million people in the US with the disease, and an additional estimated 5.4 million have not yet been diagnosed.Many people do not become aware that they have diabetes until they develop one of its life-threatening symptoms such as blindness, kidney disease, nerve damage and heart disease.
What makes this program so unique is its Internet-based delivery system and advanced curriculum. It’s designed to simplify the learning process making it convenient and easy through Internet and video presentations. |
Course Objectives
- Gain information about the pathophysiology, etiology, and complications of diabetes.
- Understand the complexities of managing drug therapy and other treatment modalities.
- Learn how pharmaceutical care is applied for patients with diabetes.
- Use effective interpersonal skills to better educate patients, caregivers, and other health-care professionals.
- Design a diabetes care center for effective patient care.
- Know how to manage and market a diabetes care center in an ambulatory setting.
The University of Florida’s Diabetes Therapy Certificate Program provides the extensive training and information you need to manage the pharmacotherapy of patients with diabetes. You will be prepared to:
- Assess and monitor your patient’s condition
- Manage complex drug therapy
- Efficiently coordinate documentation and record keeping
- Apply specialized counseling and teaching skills to better manage and care for your patients
- Market and promote the growth of your specialized skills
- Generate new income within your pharmacy
- Deal with issues related to referral, billing, and budgeting for new services
Module 1
Pharmacist Overview of Diabetes
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the pathophysiology and treatment of diabetes mellitus
- Explain the criteria for diagnosis and screening for diabetes
- Review with a patient the standards of medical care for patients with diabetes
- Discuss implications of the Diabetes Complications and Control Trial and United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study
- Recommend appropriate therapy for patients with diabetes to a patient’s physicians and/or other health care providers
- Critique a recent clinical trial relating to diabetes
- Complete diabetes patient assessment questionnaire
Module 2
Educating the Diabetes Patient
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss complications and prevention of complications secondary to diabetes
- Understand and apply various patient counseling skills in your practice
- Discuss nutrition and exercise recommendations for patients with diabetes
- Discuss and recommend tests of glycemia
- Intervene with diabetes patients and counsel them making recommendations for care, compliance, blood sugars, monitoring, HbA1c and other clinical issues
- Discuss alternative therapies used in the treatment of diabetes
Module 3
The Diabetes Care Center
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss diabetes outcomes management
- Develop a plan for marketing diabetes services
- Develop and write a 4-month plan to implement diabetes services
- Intervene and make recommendations to a patient’s physician regarding care
- Communicate by letter, email and/or by phone with the patient’s physician regarding that patient’s care and recommendations you should make for that care
- Conduct a training session for diabetes patients
Certificate
The Diabetes Therapy Certificate Program is divided into three independent learning modules to be completed in 12 weeks. You will earn a certificate from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy upon completion of the full program, indicating that you have mastered a rigorous course of study.
